Giza
Plateau, located on the west bank of the River Nile in front of Cairo,
includes the north of many attractions in the necropolis of ancient
Memphis. It is only 17 km from Saqqara and 8 km from Abu Rawash. Even
if the oldest known tomb in Giza is a mastaba which can be dated from
start to the 1st Dynasty, the main attractions are the three Giza pyramids
which attract many tourists each year.
Major tourist attractions Great Pyramids The Pyramids are the oldest structures on earth and the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) is the only monument left of the old Seven Wonders of the World. The Pyramids were also the highest structure of human origin in the world for over 43 centuries at the height of 145.75 m. Only in the 19th century AD, the pyramids have been transcended in heights. The Pyramids met for the tomb to bury the kings and nobles where they begin the mystical journey beyond. The Great Pyramid took nearly 20 years to be completed and used nearly two million limestone blocks with each weighing over two tones. The entrance of the pyramid is located on the north and the king’s burial chamber lies at the centre of the structure accessible through the Great Gallery. There are several corridors, galleries and wells leading to the King’s room or have been constructed for other functions. The walls of the King’s room and his sarcophagus are built in red granite. The Sphinx The Sphinx is also known as Abu al-Hol (Father of Terror), placed in front of the Great Pyramid and is estimated to be older than the pyramids themselves. The Sphinx is supposed to be a mysterious being that has the body of a lion and the face of a man closely resembling King Kephren. Other Pyramids The Pyramid of Khafre (Chephren) and the Pyramid of Menkaure (Mycerinus) are also located in the same complex. The Chephren pyramid still has its pyramidion and some stones with white dazzling brilliance. The pyramid of Mycerinus is just behind the pyramid of Chephren and was originally covered with limestone pink blanket. Solar Boat Museum Solar Boat museum is built on the pit where the solar boats were discovered only in 1954. These boats were built probably to bring the body of Cheops on the river Nile to the funerary temple of funeral ceremonies. Five solar boats have been discovered around the pyramid of Cheops. The Solar Boat Museum has a climate control technique to protect boats and aisles are around the boats to get a good view of the boat. HOW TO REACH |
