St. Katherine 's Monastery A three-hour trip from Sharm el-Sheikh, St Katherine 's monastery is located at the foot of Mount Sinai, about 100 kilometers inside. The area around St. Katherine’s is spectacular and robust and highly beautiful. Sinai desert monastery of St. Catherine was built more than 1400 years by the Roman emperor Justinian to protect monks and hermits living in the region. It is the oldest Christian monastery in existence. The complex houses decorated chapel twall and a stunning collection of religious icons and jeweled crosses assembled from around the Orthodox world. Colored Canyons Located about 12 km north of Nuweiba, the Canyon is in a mountain of limestone called El HIT, where it is said, Moses was lost for 40 years. As its name suggests, the canyon was stained in a variety of ways to transform attractive spectacular cliffs to a multi-color stone, because of obtaining mineralized sandstone. Surrounded by 60 meter cliffs, the zone can only be reached through 4-wheeled vehicles. The Canyons colored are an ideal place for trekking and climbing. |
