Nile River in Egypt

The Nile is a sign of life in the desert that makes the most of North Africa. This river has shaped the history and civilization of Egypt. Throughout the banks of the Nile are pyramids, temples and monuments built by the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. No rivers in the world, with the possible exception of the Ganges in India, have influenced a whole civilization like the Nile in Egypt.

The Nile’s main tributaries are white and Blue Nile, in the highest stretches. Between Cairo and Khartoum, the Nile is a good river plain, and then it is divided into many branches in the delta. The Nile Delta is famous for its lakes, the largest being the Manzala and Edku.

One of the main attractions of the River Nile in Egypt is the Nile cruise (see cruising the Nile in Egypt). You get to see many tourist attractions in Egypt on the banks of the Nile; the Great Pyramids (see the pyramids of Egypt) the Sphinx and many ancient temples.

One of the wonders of modern Egypt, the Aswan High Dam, is located on the Nile in Egypt. The dam protects the banks of the Nile from an annual flooding which has caused pain to Egypt since the time of the pharaohs.
